Kjell Engman

In the Scandinavian tradition, Kjell Engman is a born weaver of magic tales, a conjurer of times past and of wonders of the mind's eye. His narrative talents came naturally, learned from sources as diverse as Nordic myth and his yarn-spinning grandmother. Trained as a painter, ceramicist, and glass artist, Kjell joined Kosta Boda in 1978, after art school in Goteburg and the National College of Arts and Crafts in Stockholm. In 1981, he took a sabbatical to study at the Pilchuck Art Center in Washington state.
Kjell is a tirelessly productive artist with a free-ranging imagination and a passion for storytelling, whose creativity finds expression in utilitatian as well as art glass. He lists among other sources of inspiration, the animal kingdom and the worlds of music and entertainment. Kjell often works on large installations, which include elements of sound and light. He is frequently commissioned for public works in Sweden and abroad.

About Kosta Boda

With characteristic craftsmanship and good design, and an ongoing commitment to avant-garde expression, Kosta Boda has become one of the leading glasshouses in the world.

The company's three glassworks in the villages of Kosta, Boda and Åfors each have exciting individual stories of their own, yet stand together under the common brand name Kosta Boda.

Ten designers are currently on retainer at Kosta Boda. They work with both utilitarian and art glass. The designers are Monica Backström, Olle Brozén, Anna Ehrner, Kjell Engman, Anne Nilsson, Ulrica Hydman-Vallien, Gunnel Sahlin, Bertil Vallien, Ann Wåhlström and Göran Wärff.

Glass results from a great many meetings between people - artists, craftspeople and lovers of glass. The artists of Kosta Boda have a decisive role to play in all the creative stages of the process.

The cooperation between the designers and the skilled craftspeople is very close; indeed, it is essential if the designers are to transfer their intentions to the glass.
