Riedel's new Thumbs Up
"O" Decanter, introduced in February 2005,
is a delightful confluence of function and
fun. Designed by Maximilian Riedel, the
name is based on the way one holds the
decanter. The decanter features a very
deep punt that accomodates the entire
thumb, while the other four fingers
securely cradle the outside of the
decanter. This creates amazing stability
and control when pouring and the
elliptical mouth allows a perfectly drip
free pour. The Thumbs Up "O" Decanter is
hand blown, lead crystal and holds a
standard 750 ml bottle of wine.
"Many
people think a decanter is only for a very old bottle of
wine, but I decant everything. For young red wines, the
decanting really opens them up and makes them more
accessible and enjoyable. I prefer to decant wines, both
young and old. It is a sign of respect for old wines and
a sign of confidence in young wines.
Decanting old wines, just a few
moments before they are served, helps to ensure that
the wines' clarity and brilliance are not obscured by
any deposit that may have developed over
time.
Decanting young wines several
hours before they are served gives the wine a chance
to bloom and attain a stage of development that
normally requires years of aging."
